I was christened, married and confirmed in the Church of England so I knew nothing about Unitarianism.  I had only been in Underbank Chapel twice, to a friend’s wedding and when my husband and I were godparents to a friend’s baby.  That was in the 1950’s.  It was to be some 46 years later that I entered the Chapel again, this time though, it was a sad occasion as it was my husband’s funeral; his family were Unitarians and this is where he wished to be laid to rest.  The Rev. Ernest Baker invited me to a service shortly afterwards when those who had died were especially remembered, but as my grief was still very raw I declined.  However, some months later I saw a notice that it was to be the Chapel’s Harvest Festival, made a note of the date and considered attending.  I made my mind up to go and with my Harvest gift I walked to the Chapel feeling rather apprehensive.  At the end of the service I was welcomed by the Minister and some of the congregation, which put me at my ease, so I decided to come again.

That was ten years ago!  I enjoy all aspects of Chapel life and realise that Unitarianism is more to my way of thinking. 

What made me decide to attend the Harvest Festival I don’t know, but I am very glad I did!
