Welcome to Underbank Chapel

News

Our very best wishes to go Ernest Vickers and Ilsa.  Ernest is attending hospital quite regularly at the moment.  Beryl is struggling on bravely, though suffering from a trapped nerve in her neck and shoulder.  Joyce Wright of the Ladies’ Group is receiving treatment in the Northern General Hospital for asthma and hopes to be home before long.  We wish you well, Joyce.  Our very loyal friend Freda Vickers, now living in Middlesbrough, has kindly sent us a parcel of small items she has made for the Fayre.  Thank you Freda.  We are also pleased to hear that Freda’s daughter Sheila and husband are visiting their family in Brisbane.  Freda keeps herself busy and plays scrabble regularly.  Well done.  A card from Bob and Shelagh Wright in Chesterfield tells us how they enjoyed a Gilman Get-Together when they met once more in Underbank Schoolroom – ‘home territory’ says Bob.  Joan and Geoff recently received a surprise letter from Rev Trevor Jones.  They were the first couple to be married by Trevor.  He confesses that his knees were knocking.  Sadly, he tells us he is learning to cope with diabetes but often thinks of happy times at Underbank Chapel – his first ministry.

Christmas Fayre (Lomas Hall)

Date:  Saturday 8th November – 11 am to 4.00 pm.
Please give us whatever support you can.  Alert friends, relatives, neighbours – it’s a friendly event with excellent refreshments all day.  We are very pleased to receive any items for sale: lucky dips, tombola, raffle, pickles, preserves and baking for stall or refreshments – and we’re always ready to discuss new ideas.  Let’s make this a happy and successful occasion.

Special Request

We understand that some profits from the Carnival are shared out between the village charities and we would like to send a representative to the Carnival Committee.  Are we fortunate enough to have a volunteer?  Have a word with Geoff Helliwell if you think you would like to have a go.  It could benefit the chapel financially.

Hoyland Market

Another effort towards swelling our Christmas Fayre Funds has been our annual visit to Hoyland Market, selling left-over bric-a-brac from Carnival Day.  Five committee members stood from 7 am ‘til 1 pm and managed to raise the princely sum of £72.  We reckon that this must equate to approximately £2.50 per hour for each of us.  Chapel funds are not achieved too easily are they?  Here’s hoping for healthier results on 8th November at the Christmas Fayre!!!

Ladies’ Group

The October meeting was a busy scene of Christmas wrapping paper, cuddly toys, woolly hats, scarves, gloves, etc, and shoe boxes being filled as our gifts were packed for this year’s Shoe Box Appeal.  The boxes are distributed to children who have suffered because of war, natural disaster, poverty, illness or neglect.
Thank you Edie for storing the boxes and arranging for their collection.
Gift parcels were wrapped for sale at the Christmas Fayre – don’t forget – Saturday 8th November – Lomas Hall from 11.00 am ‘til 4.00 pm.
The next Ladies’ Group meeting will be on Wednesday 12th November.

Musical Evening and Fish and Chip Supper

A most enjoyable evening.  The lovely fish and chips were served out quickly and hot to 70 people, the result of excellent organisation.
Phil and Tony entertained with piano, piano accordion and banjo, leading us with a variety of well known popular songs.  After the entertainment a choice of mouth-watering cakes were served.  What an evening!
Many thanks to Ashley, Jean, Margaret and Keith and all their helpers – not forgetting Petros of Crosspool Fisheries, who supplied the fish and chips.
A total of £286 was raised for Chapel funds.

Stannington Ladies’ Bowling Team
Three bowlers equiped for a day in the sun

Congratulations to Margaret Nichols and her team of bowlers – the Stannington Ladies’ Bowling Team.  Margaret is captain of the team and they have won the Horton Doubles Cup.
The Cup was presented to the team by the Lord Mayor of Sheffield at the Holiday Inn Hotel on Saturday 18th October.
The Horton Doubles Cup originated in 1916.  Perhaps someone can give us some snippets of information about the history of the Cup?
Underbank Architecture
An interesting snippet from ‘Nonconformist Church Architecture’, a book written in 1914 by Ronald P Jones:
Underbank Chapel is a perfect piece of design and proportion, and the fact that Yorkshire stone did not lend itself to carved décor gives it a simplicity quite appropriate to its modest scale.

Did you know?

The cruise liner, Queen Elizabeth II, moves only six inches for each gallon of diesel that it burns.

What is Unitariansim?

Unitarianism is a religious movement which has evolved in the Christian tradition and originated in the Reformation of the 16th Century. It now recognises and upholds the right of each individual to seek and to find truth and meaning according to the evidence of his or her own experience.

Whilst affirming our Christian heritage, we recognise that wisdom may be found in the other spiritual traditions of humankind. We believe that religion must have contemporary relevance, and that it must be honest. To this end Unitarianism offers freedom of conscience and does not require its members to subscribe to set creeds, dogmas or articles of belief
